Your working life · 9 steps
First contract, first payslip: between the gross pay in your contract and what lands in your account, there are contributions, tax withheld at source and your health cover. Understanding these lines from the first month means checking you're paid correctly, missing none of the benefits your pay opens up, and facing your first tax return calmly.
Unless stated otherwise, the salary in a job offer is gross, often annual: compare it with salaries for your job in your area before accepting. Then reread the contract: pay, working hours, collective agreement and probation period, which only exists if it is written in.
Employee contributions (pension, health, CSG) take you from gross to take-home pay, then income tax is withheld at source. To compare two offers, bring everything back to gross annual pay, with or without bonuses and a thirteenth month as each contract says, then convert to net monthly pay.
Check the base salary and hours, the name of your collective agreement, the contributions, the health cover line, take-home pay, tax withheld and, at the very bottom, the montant net social: that's the figure CAF uses for the in-work benefit. Any missing amount is claimed from your employer in writing.
If you have never filed a tax return, your employer doesn't know your rate: they apply the default rate, a grid based only on your salary. Nothing is lost: your first return sets your real tax, the difference comes back to you if you paid too much, and your personal rate applies after that.
Joining the company health plan is compulsory, except in exemption cases you must request yourself, usually when you're hired: already covered as a dependant under another compulsory group plan, an individual policy still running, the complémentaire santé solidaire, a short fixed-term contract. An exemption is not an automatic saving: you lose the share your employer pays.
The prime d'activité tops up modest earnings for adult employees, and for students and apprentices above a minimum monthly income: claim it online from CAF, then validate your return every quarter. If you rent, claim housing benefit (APL) as soon as you move in, with your landlord's certificate. Neither goes back before the month you apply.
As an apprentice, your minimum pay depends on your age and your year of contract, and it changes on the first day of the month after your birthday. As an intern, the stipend becomes compulsory beyond a certain length, counted on the time you are actually present. Both are exempt from income tax up to the annual SMIC, and a stipend alone does not open the in-work benefit.
The following spring, you file your income for the year, even though tax was already withheld. If you were attached to your parents' tax household, you normally receive a letter with your login details to file online; otherwise, your first return is filed on paper. Think about actual expenses if your commute is long.
Your CPF is topped up every year you work: to sign up for a course you need a FranceConnect+ identity, and only you can sign up, from your own account, never through a link you received. Also keep an eye on your pay: compare it with the market for your job to prepare your first pay rise.
Describe your situation: Nego tells you where to start, follows the checked steps of each procedure, does the calculations with the site's tools and drafts your letters. It does not replace the administration: each procedure is completed on the official service.
Because, unless stated otherwise, the amount offered is gross: employee contributions (pension, health, CSG) come off it to give take-home pay, then income tax is withheld at source. The site's gross-to-net converter and net-after-tax calculator give both amounts from your gross pay.
The default rate, as long as the tax office has no rate for you: a grid based only on your salary, ignoring your situation. After your first return, your real tax is worked out, any excess is refunded and a personal rate replaces it from September.
Yes, the following spring, even if tax was already withheld: it sets your real tax and gives back any excess. If you were attached to your parents' household, you normally get your login details by post to file online; otherwise, your first return is on paper.
Yes, if they are an adult on modest earnings; students and apprentices only above a minimum monthly income, and an internship stipend does not count as earned income. The CAF simulator estimates your entitlement from the montant net social on your payslips.
Yes, except in specific exemption cases you must request yourself, usually when you're hired. Your employer pays at least half; their share is added to your taxable pay, and covering your family is optional, often at your own cost.
Either you or your employer can end it without a reason or redundancy pay, as long as the notice period (délai de prévenance) is respected. You receive your salary up to the last day, your untaken leave as a payment, your certificate of employment and the France Travail certificate.
