Legal minimum and compulsory threshold calculated by the site from the rules in force; contributions on the part above the minimum estimated by URSSAF's engine, rates as of 26 October 2026.
Everything starts from hours of attendance: weekly hours multiplied by the length of the internship (a month counts as 52 ÷ 12 weeks). The site compares that total with the legal threshold of 309 h to say whether an allowance is compulsory, then applies the hourly minimum of €4.50, i.e. 15.0% of the hourly social security ceiling (€30.00 in 2026), to the hours of an average month and to the whole internship. If the internship agreement provides more than the minimum, the excess is subject to contributions. The site then asks the modele-social engine, the one behind URSSAF's simulator, for the rate it applies to the part of an internship contract it deems subject, and carries it over to the part calculated in hours, because the engine itself works from a monthly minimum. Both references, the official hourly minimum and the engine's monthly reading, remain visible in the detail.
So that two people get the same figure from the same gross pay, the site always calculates from the same baseline situation. Each line can be changed in the calculator's options where it matters.
A correct calculation for a typical situation is not your payslip. Here is what the tool does not know, so that you read the result as a reliable order of magnitude, not a promise.
At 35 h a week and at the legal minimum: hours of attendance, obligation and amounts for a few lengths.
| Length | Hours of attendance | Allowance compulsory | Per month | Over the internship |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | 151.67 h | No | €682.50 | €682.50 |
| 2 months | 303.33 h | No | €682.50 | €1,365.00 |
| 3 months | 455 h | Yes | €682.50 | €2,047.50 |
| 4 months | 606.67 h | Yes | €682.50 | €2,730.00 |
| 6 months | 910 h | Yes | €682.50 | €4,095.00 |
Many companies pay above the minimum, especially at the end of studies. The exempt part stays pegged to the hourly minimum; the rest bears contributions, at the rate the engine applies to an internship contract. For a 3-month internship at 35 h a week:
| Hourly allowance | Per month | Exempt part | Part subject | Estimated net per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| €4.50 | €682.50 | €682.50 | €0.00 | €683 |
| €5.00 | €758.33 | €682.50 | €75.83 | €746 |
| €6.00 | €910.00 | €682.50 | €227.50 | €872 |
| €8.00 | €1,213.33 | €682.50 | €530.83 | €1,124 |
An allowance at the minimum is still a long way from a salary: an apprentice's pay clearly exceeds the internship minimum from the first year, with social rights, and the SMIC applies to any first job, even a fixed-term one. If your internship is extended or looks like a real position, that is an argument for a higher allowance or a job offer; prepare that discussion with the guide to negotiating a job offer and, for a first salary, with the estimate of what your CV is worth.
As soon as the internship exceeds two months, i.e. 309 h of attendance in the organisation over the academic year (44 days of 7 h), consecutive or not. An internship of exactly two months at 35 h a week totals 303.33 h: the allowance is not yet due; from 309 h, it is due for the whole period, from day one.
The legal minimum is hourly: €4.50 per hour of attendance, i.e. 15.0% of the hourly social security ceiling (€30.00). For 35 h a week, that is €682.50 for an average month and €2,047.50 over a 3-month internship. The allowance is paid every month, not at the end of the internship.
Up to the legal minimum, no contributions: the net equals the gross. Above it, the excess is subject to contributions; for €6.00 an hour full time, the allowance reaches €910.00 a month, of which €227.50 is subject, and the estimated net falls to €872. Income tax is not due on the allowance of an internship under an agreement, up to one year of the SMIC.
The threshold is counted in hours of attendance, not weeks: 20 h a week for 8 weeks makes 160 h, 149 h short of it being compulsory. Below the threshold, the organisation may pay an allowance freely; if it does, the same hourly minimum applies to the exempt part.
