Practical guide
The minimum wage is the floor for every negotiation. The amounts the site uses, how it is uprated, and what it means for you.
The SMIC (France's minimum wage) is set as a gross hourly rate; the monthly amount corresponds to the legal working week of 35 hours, and the annual amount to fifty-two weeks. The net amount is estimated by the site's engine, before tax.
| Gross hourly | Gross monthly (full time) | Gross annual | Estimated net monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| €12.31 | €1,867.02 | €22,404.20 | €1,456 |

Weekly hours, months paid, health-cover share: the calculator gives the gross and net SMIC per hour, per month and per year, with the same engine as the rest of the site.

Another hourly rate? Convert another hourly rate into monthly and yearly pay. Apprentice or professionalisation contract: an apprentice's pay is a share of the SMIC by age and contract year; a worker under 18 outside an apprenticeship may be on a reduced SMIC, to check on service-public.gouv.fr. An internship is not paid at the SMIC but according to the internship allowance.
It is raised every 1 January, in line with the inflation measured for the lowest-income households and with part of the growth in the purchasing power of basic wages. During the year, an automatic increase kicks in as soon as prices have risen by at least two per cent since the last increase. The government can also decide on an extra “coup de pouce” (a discretionary boost). In practice, job ads published at the end of the year may show an amount that has fallen below the new SMIC a few weeks later; the employer must then bring it into line.
For part-time work, the SMIC applies pro rata to the hours worked: the hourly rate stays the same, the monthly amount goes down. Apprentices and young people in training are paid specific percentages depending on their age and the year of their contract, and some state-subsidised contracts have their own rules: check the exact amounts on service-public.fr before you sign.
A full-time job offer cannot pay less than the SMIC. The site uses it as a plausibility floor: any annual amount below €21,300 (95% of the annual SMIC) is excluded from the statistics, because it is almost always a typing error, a monthly amount mistaken for an annual one, or an unreported part-time job. The full rules are in the methodology.
Many jobs start close to the SMIC in job ads, but rarely exactly at it: collective agreements set minimums by grade, often higher, and allowances (Sunday work, night work, meals, attendance) come on top. Before an interview, look at the range offered for your occupation and the breakdown by experience: it is the strongest argument for asking for a little more than the minimum, even at the start of your career. The guide on negotiating a job offer sets out the method.
Yes in mainland France and in most overseas departments; Mayotte applies its own amount. Collective agreements often set higher minimums depending on the job and length of service.
The SMIC is a floor, not a set rate. First check the minimum in the collective agreement for your job, then use your experience, your working hours and comparable job ads for your occupation to ask for more.
It is an estimated net figure before tax, calculated for a full-time job with the rules of the régime général (France's general social security scheme). The payslip may differ slightly depending on health insurance, any overtime and the exemptions specific to low wages.
