Procedure · Tax and money
Every spring you report last year's income, even though your tax is already withheld at source. Online, almost everything is prefilled: your job is to check the amounts, add what is missing and pick the right options before your département's deadline.
Nego follows the checked steps on this page, does the calculations with the site's tools and drafts your letters. It does not replace the administration: the procedure is completed on the official service.
Yes. The return takes stock of the year: it works out your tax reductions and credits, triggers a refund or a balance due and updates your withholding rate. Even with no income it is compulsory, and it gives you a non-taxation notice, useful for some benefits.
The return for 2026 income will open in April 2027; the deadlines, set by groups of départements, are only published in spring. As a guide, in 2026 they were 21 May (départements 01 to 19), 28 May (20 to 54) and 4 June (55 onwards), and paper returns were due by 19 May at the latest.
File straight away, online if the service is still open, otherwise on the paper form. You will pay a 10% surcharge and late-payment interest of 0.20% a month until you file; if you wait for a formal notice, the surcharge rises to 20%, then 40% if you do not respond within 30 days.
If you are 20 or older and were attached to your parents' tax household last year, you receive a letter with your three identifiers (tax number, online access number, reference tax income) to create your account and file online. If you were not attached, or have no access number or reference tax income, your first return is filed on paper.
The tax office tells you: the document is placed in your online account when the campaign opens, with an email, or sent by post. If you no longer qualify this year (a move, a change of situation, new income such as rent), you are told by email in mid-April or by a message on your paper return.
Rules checked on 27 October 2026 against the sources above. This page explains the procedure; it replaces neither the administration nor legal advice.
