Procedure · Tax and money
A change in your family situation is reported twice: first online within 60 days, so that your withholding rate follows straight away, then in the following spring's tax return, which applies it to the whole year. Here is what to do in each case.
Nego follows the checked steps on this page, does the calculations with the site's tools and drafts your letters. It does not replace the administration: the procedure is completed on the official service.
Report it as soon as you can: until you do, your rate stays based on your old situation, which can mean too much withheld or a balance to pay the following summer. The event is taken into account in your tax return in any case.
No: unmarried partners each file their own return for their own income. If you share the care of a child equally, each of you can claim half of the extra shares.
Not by default: since 1 September 2025, each of you has an individual rate based on your own income, without changing the couple's total tax. You can opt for a shared household rate under “Gérer mon prélèvement à la source” or in your return.
Yes: a child born or adopted during the year gives an extra half-share or share for the whole year, whatever the date of birth.
From your own online tax account, with your own login, not your spouse's. Answer “Oui” to the question about the year's events, give the date of death, complete the joint return and then your individual return. If your spouse was self-employed, their business results returns must be filed within 6 months.
Rules checked on 27 October 2026 against the sources above. This page explains the procedure; it replaces neither the administration nor legal advice.
