Your monthly net taxable pay is enough: personal rate, a couple's individualised rates, the neutral grid rate, and what each option withholds every month, including any complement owed to the tax office.

Estimated over twelve identical months, on the current scale, by the site's code; your actual rate comes from your last return (personal space on impots.gouv.fr).
The site calculates the year's tax on the current scale, as if your monthly net taxable pay stayed the same for twelve months, with the 10% deduction and your family quotient. The personal rate is that tax, before reductions and credits, divided by your income: that is how the tax office sets yours (bofip.impots.gouv.fr).
For a couple, the individualised rate of the lower-earning partner comes from the tax calculated on their income with half the household's shares; the other pays the rest of the household tax on their own income. The neutral rate comes from the official grid, based only on the month's net taxable pay.
So that two people get the same figure from the same gross pay, the site always calculates from the same baseline situation. Each line can be changed in the calculator's options where it matters.
A correct calculation for a typical situation is not your payslip. Here is what the tool does not know, so that you read the result as a reliable order of magnitude, not a promise.

Withholding is only an advance: the year's tax remains the one on your return, and the gap is settled the following summer. To know that tax, reductions and credits included, the income tax simulator does the full calculation; to see what remains in your account each month, the net after tax tool starts from your gross pay.
The tax office takes the tax from your last return, before tax reductions and credits, and divides it by the income subject to withholding. The rate is updated every year in September, after the spring return, and you can change it during the year in your personal space (bofip.impots.gouv.fr).
For a married or civil-partnership couple, each pays according to their own income, without the total changing; it has been the default rule since 1 September 2025. Example: €3,200 and €2,100 of monthly net taxable pay give a household rate of 5.9%, and individualised rates of 7.5% and 3.5%. You can keep the household rate by option (bofip.impots.gouv.fr).
When the tax office has no rate for you (first job, no return), or when you choose not to pass your rate to your employer. It depends only on your monthly net taxable pay, as if you were single with no children, according to an official grid (bofip.impots.gouv.fr).
No: the year's tax does not change. If the neutral rate is lower than your personal rate, you must pay the difference to the tax office yourself every month, by direct debit (nothing under €5 a month), or face a penalty. The option is mainly used so as not to show your rate to your employer (bofip.impots.gouv.fr).
It is based on your past income. After a pay rise, a new job, a birth or a marriage, the year's tax can drift from what was withheld; the difference is settled the following summer. You can update your rate online to avoid a large catch-up bill or overpayment.
