Procedure · Starting your own business
Registering is free (except for commercial agents) and is done online on the business formalities one-stop shop, at the earliest one month before you start trading. Here are the steps in order, the documents, the tax and social security options to choose straight away, the Acre relief and the rules if you keep a salaried job.
Nego follows the checked steps on this page, does the calculations with the site's tools and drafts your letters. It does not replace the administration: the procedure is completed on the official service.
Nothing: registration on the national business register (and on the trade register for a commercial activity) is free. Only commercial agents pay for their compulsory registration on the special register of commercial agents.
Yes, if your contract has no exclusivity clause (which is only allowed for full-time jobs), the activity does not compete with your employer and you do it outside your working hours. For a craft activity with your employer's clients, you need their agreement, and some collective agreements require prior authorisation.
It replaces standard withholding: your tax is paid monthly or quarterly with your contributions, at a fixed rate on your turnover. It is only possible if your household's reference taxable income from two years earlier is below a ceiling. Choose it at the start or by the last day of the 3rd month after the month you start at the latest; otherwise, the request must be made before 30 September for the following year. The site's simulator compares both.
If you receive unemployment benefit (ARE), you can get Acre. France Travail also offers Arce, which pays part of your benefit as a lump sum. The rules on combining them and the procedure are set out in the page on unemployment and starting a business.
If the business is registered at home, you can ask Insee not to publish the address. Your personal assets are separate from your business assets and your main home is protected automatically, except in cases of fraud or serious breaches of your tax or social security obligations.
Rules checked on 27 October 2026 against the sources above. This page explains the procedure; it replaces neither the administration nor legal advice.
